Godric…or is it Yoda?…Returns. Again.
February 25, 2011 in Godric, True Blood
TVLine are reporting today that we will be seeing yet more of Godric in season 4 of True Blood.
TVLine has exclusively learned that Allan Hyde will reprise his role as Eric’s late, forever young-looking maker when the HBO drama resumes this summer.
The duration and exact timing of his stint are unknown. It’s also unclear what form the onetime vampire sheriff of Area 9 will take given that he succumbed to the worst sunburn in history during season 2. (He returned briefly from the great beyond in the season 3 finale to deliver a message to Eric.)Alan Ball isn’t offering too many clues, except to say that fans will see “a different side of Godric.”
A different side of Godric huh? Well, I’m all for that, since the side we saw in Season 3 made me want to dress him in his Sunday best and take him to church.
When we feel the need to do that with a vampire, SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT.
Godric wasn’t always the peace loving, suicidal vampire we first met in Season 2 – “A vampire is never at the mercy of his emotions – he dominates them.” And Eric has made more than one indirect reference to their history together. The DVD extras state that Godric and Eric hunted around battlefields, feeding on the dead and dying. Some flashbacks in this vein would make for an illuminating contrast to Bill and Lorena’s Chicago bloodbath flashbacks in season 2, no?

I can’t wait for this. I want to see flashbacks to Erics past between his turning and WWII which is all we’ve gotten so far. I want to see what has shaped Eric as we know him today.
While I like the overall message of Yoda Godric and the visions and liked the dimension it brought to Eric’s character, I get why some people found them cheesy or cliche. I didn’t really care for them beyond the message. Another side to Godric, I say bring it on!! Can’t wait. I want to see badass Godric.
I agree with you, SVB. What annoys me about another Godric return is that it all feels like a bunch of fan service. Godric was absolutely awesome in S2 and his popularity probably comes from being significant to what is probably the best episode of True Blood “I Will Rise Up” (2×09) but his scenes in S3 were not so good. An underwhelming flashback and a hokey appearance as a ghost did not work for me one bit! I knew that Godric would make an appearance again at some stage in the series, considering his connection to Eric, but I hope he doesn’t show up gratuitously every season just to keep the fans happy! A more vampish Godric would be very much appreciated this season.
It does feel like fan service, Sean.
And since we’re on the bandwagon of dishing up flashbacks to appease the fans….I WANT MY FRANKLIN FLASHBACK, DAMMIT.
YES, PLEASE!!!
*nods along with want for a Franklin flashback*
I want my Talbot babysits QSA flashback minisode!
Oh yes. Talbot and QSA in the same room was the Great Missed Opportunity of S3.
How did this not happen?? I don’t understand.
I think the “other side” is someone else’s POV, because honestly I’d love to see Pam’s flashback of Godric, Eric and herself interacting. That would just be.. awesome sauce.
But again, I’m not exactly warm to seeing more Godric if they are merely going to trot him back out because he’s popular. Again.
Quite frankly, I thought his first appearance in S3 was golden, the second one was a trainwreck.
If they HAD to go down the road they did.. did they have to make Godric glow? Wouldn’t Eric seeing “normal” Godric be more of a mindfuck whether what he was seeing was real or not? That’s also not to say that what Eric saw was Godric’s ghost, more like Eric’s idealized subconscious version, and I suppose the message worked for the storyline they had going on. I just had such high hopes for that scene when we first heard about it. Really, less would have been more IMO.
Another issue I had was that I thought the lines came out dry and forced, surely that wasn’t the best dialogue that could have been written and I don’t know how much AH is to blame.
And… I’m sorry, I just don’t believe someone who commits suicide can preach forgiveness, its just incongruous in my head. He couldn’t forgive himself, who the heck is he to talk? FFS Sookie had to TELL HIM GOD FORGIVES. I’m not saying he wasn’t concerned with it, but this clearly wasn’t his view before he self-immolated.
SERENA DOES NOT FORGIVE. PHROAAARR!!!
Godric’s dialogue in S3 was ATROCIOUS. “You make me bleeeeeed my child!?? “Forgiveness is love”? WTF?
Allan Hyde did the best he could with it but it was woeful…cringeworthy, really.
The Nazi flashback early in the season was kick-ass, though.
Honestly, I thought it was so bad it retroactively cheapened IWRU. :/
I know! I remember ranting about that at the time, saying that it really did cheapen his season 2 portrayal because it was like they were going for the same “Godric is SO awesome” factor, but just completely missed the mark with it.
It just all came off wrong.
And I guess that’s one of the things about this show. When they get it right, they knock it out of the park. When they get it wrong….boy is it WRONG.
Godric has been a pretty good example of that, though there are numerous others.
I need say nothing, because you all pretty much read my mind.
But I will point out how ridiculous Godric looked in his SS uniform. It was like he was playing dress up in his Dad’s closet.
Of course, wardrobe malfunction aside, I agree with you both. His first appearance in season 3 was lovely. The second one? NOT SO MUCH. But I still laugh at the whole YOU MAKE ME BLEED, MY CHILD bit– it’s no FRESH TOWELS? but it’s a chestnut of dialogue for the ages, nevertheless. So I guess that scene was good for something…
Maybe the dialogue was so corny because that’s what Eric imagined him saying. After all, this is the same vamp who fantacized about Sookie calling him “cowboy”
*fantasized
LMAO Ashley!
Sookie’s the queen of corniness, not Eric! Got that AB! That “cowboy” almost ruined it for me.
LOL…i loved that fantasy of Eric’s but I always thought that “cowboy” was funny. I found it kinda cute as well but funny that Eric was imagining that.
Then, Eric also fantasized that Sookie’s swear word vocabularly extended only to “cheese ‘n rice” when she drops the F Bomb almost as much as me LOL.
Yeah, that’s true.
Although she seems to have a problem with the other cuss words…note the “Holy S” she said in the basement. For some reason, the F bomb seems to be the one she’s comfortable with, LOL.
I don’t know. I don’t see them bringing back Godric to appease fans. I see it being part of Erics story which is why they are bringing him back.
I loved the Nazi flashback. I see Godric’s role in Season 4 being more like that, not Season 3 ep. 11 and 12 Godric.
I didn’t love the sappy dialogue, but I didn’t hate it either.
I can’t believe I’m going to defend AB. But when has he ever appeased fans? Somewhere, somehow , down the road it will hopefully become clear why the dialogue was as it was.
I too will be more than happy to see a different side of Godric whatever the writers dream up.
What else can I add… I just hope the “different side” is not Ghost Godric and it’s badass Godric instead from flashbacks from his past with Eric. I would love to see a flashback of Eric’s first times as a vampire, with Godric teaching him how to hunt and feed, etc.
Also, I’m wondering how these flashbacks could fit with Amnesia Eric.
As long as they stay away from the epic fail that was Ghost Godric, I’ll be fine.
@Serena,
I agree with everything you said.
@MAS – also agree that Godric looked silly in the SS uniform, but at least the dialog there was pretty good.
I want to see Godric tearing some people apart with blood running all down his face like we saw when he turned Eric. Please.
Godric probably wouldn’t have looked so silly in the SS uniform if he hadn’t been standing next to AS. I’m sorry, but he totally worked that uniform. Safe to say, I’ll never think a Nazi uniform is hot again, but it was in that moment.
I am happy about Godric returning…I hope it makes sense in story context and not just a cheap special guest star appearance.
And can they bring back Lorena too…she was fabulous!
I am outright obsessed with the G/E backstory. Eric alluded to Russell being in Constantinople and the Mayan Empire, so perhaps we’ll see one of those.
(I have literally been writing fic about this, I’m so obsessed.)
