Deadlocked and Loaded

May 1, 2012 in Deadlocked - Book 12, Sookie & Eric

***This is a post-release review containing lengthy analysis and some spoilers. Comments may also contain spoilers.***

Deadlocked: a state in which progress is impossible, as in a dispute, produced by the counteraction of opposing forces. A standstill, or a stalemate.

Or, to put it bluntly: “I want what I want. You want what you want. And you’d better believe that I’m not gonna be the one who blinks first.”

May is finally here, and another torturous 364 days are behind us. Deadlocked is the twelfth and penultimate book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.  There’s no delicate way to put this – hold onto your hats, peeps, because Deadlocked is an exceptionally wild, and at times uncomfortable ride.  As befitting a title so close to the end of the series, Sookie is in for the usual revelations, confrontations and near death experiences. What is different (and most compelling) about Deadlocked is the extra lashings of angst and soul searching Sookie is now forced to contend with on top of her usual.   As real people know, angst and soul searching are a necessary part of becoming a big girl and, well…sometimes there’s nothing else for it except to just suck it up.

Sookie’s journey is almost over, and this is where the rubber hits the road.

What’s In A Name?

April 16, 2012 in Dead Ever After - Book 13, Deadlocked - Book 12, Promo Events, Sookie & Eric, Sookie Stackhouse

A few interesting bits of news have filtered out from the Romantic Times Convention held this past weekend in Chicago. Charlaine Harris attended, along with several other authors from the paranormal romance genre.

With only two weeks left until the release of Deadlocked, it feels like we’re jumping the gun a bit for Charlaine to announce the title of the 13th and final book in the Sookie series – but that’s just what she did. Sookie’s final outing will be titled Dead Ever After, a cute little play on the Happily Ever After/HEA angle that has stuck to these books like glue, in spite of Ms Harris’ best efforts.

In the absence of any word on her Facebook or blog, I’ve been sitting on this post due to a nagging feeling that Charlaine had unintentionally trolled her romance reading hosts – that she’d perhaps thrown this title out there as a joke and they missed her dark sense of humour. Ms Harris spends so much time and energy trying to convince readers that Sookie’s HEA is secondary to her story as an individual, that it seemed counter-intuitive to me that she’d give the final book a title that plays so directly to the romance angle after all this time. But then, it’s not the author who has the final say on the title, either. The publisher usually holds sway here, and this particular choice says to me that the publisher knows exactly who is reading these books…and why.

That can only be a good thing, right?

At any rate over the last day or so the title has started to grow on me, and of course I can see lots of possibilities. A long held and popular theory here is that we’ll see at least one, if not two major deaths in the final book. As much as it pains me to say it, my gut feeling one of these deaths may be Pam. It pains me far less to say that if not Pam, then it will probably be Bill. But even better than that, if we take this title strictly at face value it would seem a Dead (Vampire) Happily Ever After is still very much on the cards.

I want you all to remember this come May 1st, because I think the timing of this announcement is very much by design. Just saying.

You can read a few more of Charlaine’s comments during the session here.

First Chapter of Deadlocked Released

April 4, 2012 in Book Spoilers, Deadlocked - Book 12

Gollancz UK has yet another Sookie related gem, the first chapter of Deadlocked! Read it here.

Some quick thoughts: it looks like Sookie finally ends up in Hooligans and we get the beginning of her conversation with Niall. What stuck out to me the as the most important part of this whole chapter were Sookie’s thoughts on the situation with Tara and JB du Rone as well as with Kennedy and Dany.

“What’s up with you, girl? You and Danny have a fight over another woman?” Tara asked bluntly.

Kennedy turned a bright, hard look on Tara, and for a minute I thought she’d say something cutting. Then we’d have an open quar rel. But Kennedy said, “He’s doing something secret, and he won’t tell me what. He says he’s gonna be gone on Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings and evenings. He won’t say where he’s going or why.”

Since the fact that Danny was totally smitten with Kennedy was obvious to the dimmest bulb, we were all struck silent with astonish ment at her blindness.

This passage almost screams it is a foil to Sookie and her situation with Eric regarding Freyda as last we knew, I think Sookie’s thoughts on those around her always say a lot about her own relationships.

Also interesting was Niall questioning Sookie with “a hard edge” if she had sex with Claude. Oh these fairies and their awkward moments!

Gollancz Sneak Peek Inside Deadlocked

March 21, 2012 in Book Spoilers, Deadlocked - Book 12

Gollancz UK have a teasy little post on Deadlocked up today.

While it doesn’t reveal anything earth-shattering, there are a few interesting tidbits worth sharing.

…If you think you know where this series is going, you’ve not seen anything yet! Hold on to your hats, because this ending totally blew me away . . .

I was thrilled that the focus in Deadlocked is, fair and square, on Sookie. I love this character but we’ve been with her through so many huge trials and tribulations that it was a real treat to come back to the things that matter to Sookie….her family, her love life and most importantly, her choices.

Sookie’s future is in her own hands, and her heart is, sometimes painfully, on her sleeve. Whatever decision she chooses to make someone will be hurt (to be honest, I think Sookie will be hurt), but I was with her every step of the way.

Dead Reckoning was very much about Sookie dealing with changes – both good and bad – to her personality and morality after more than two years of a steady diet of death and drama. It seems to come with the territory when you’re dating a vampire…but Sookie is mostly human, and so the process of reconciling some of her choices has been a very difficult and confronting one for her. I’d hoped we see her delve into this even further in Deadlocked, and it sounds as though we will. I expect this will be a major theme for Sookie through to the end of the series.

The comment about the ending is intriguing. I take a long view of this series, and the endings of individual books are usually nothing more than a hook to get us back for the next one – with very little impact on where the next book starts. Nonetheless, the last two novels haven’t really had a cliffhanger type ending, so we’re probably due for one!

There’s only 42 days to go until May 1st – and we’re stupidly excited! Don’t forget to check in regularly as we continue to post the dirt up to the release date.
